Genoa recognizes the children of two mothers, Salis: "Politics is not done on the skin of children"

Group photo with families, officially recognized with the signature of the new mayor Silvia Salis. Just returned to the left after the center-right administration, the Municipality of Genoa has begun to recognize children born to female couples, conceived abroad with medically assisted procreation. This morning, in the Hall of Representation of Palazzo Tursi, the seat of the Municipality, the new administration welcomed 11 recognitions. "We are writing a page of history: for the first time, two mothers have been registered in the municipal registry office - explained Salis during the dedicated ceremony - it is the end of a contradiction that until now recognized as a parent only the woman biologically linked to her daughter or son. an unjust exclusion, as sanctioned by the Constitutional Court".
Accompanied by the council members and the rights lawyer Ilaria Gibelli, Salis underlines how «Genoa is among the first large Italian cities to recognize both mothers from birth, with the conviction that it is not just an administrative act, but a declaration of civilization: it is the state that remembers to be secular, fair, modern».
"They will tell us that these are not the city's emergencies, but we are dedicating ourselves to them every day of work. This is a question of dignity. To those who turned up their noses - he is referring to the former deputy mayor Pietro Piciocchi, a defeated candidate in the last municipal elections - we answer that family is where we grow together, where we educate, where we love. Every family must have the freedom to exist, every child the freedom to be recognized. We must be aware of living in a secular state: secularism is not a threat to religion. It is its presupposition".
"As a woman - concluded the signing ceremony on the first 11 Salis awards - I promise my commitment, as a woman, is so that all women can decide about their own body, their own life and their own family. I will never pretend that my faith becomes an obligation for those who believe in something else. Secularism is the only form of justice that truly guarantees everyone's rights. In Genoa, rights are not measured by sexual orientation".
“What we are doing today was something that was already absolutely permitted if you looked at the legislation and gave it a constitutionally oriented interpretation – continues Emilio Robotti, Councilor for Citizenship Rights – because what the most authoritative doctrine and various prosecutors said is that the interpretation was in the best interest of the minor, and there were no obstacles like there are in the case of male homoparental families, we can say in short that different choices could have been made and that not making them was a political choice, as well as a prudent one”.
